Actually, no. Those never were his words.

On return from a sales trip, he perhaps said that he "Expected to get five orders but came back with eighteen". The orders were for a new, and expensive, machine so perhaps expectaiotns were not that high for that specific machine on that particular trip.

Not quite the same thing as a world market for five computers.

Bill Gates

"640k ought to be enough for anybody." Bill Gates, 1981.

No again according to Bill Gates.

His comment was actually based on a comparisson between the new IBM PC which could handle 640k of program memory, with the older 8 bit machines, which were limited to just 64k.

A huge step forward, yes, but enough for anybody for evermore, no.
