There was a time when Netscape Navigator and then, Internet Explorer were the big names.

When Microsoft began bundling Internet Explorer into its new Windows Operating Systems, other browsers began to feel threatened. Why load another browser when Internet Explorer is already there on your new PC?

The pie-chart on the left shows how things have changed. October 2009 and Microsoft's Internet Explorer still accounts for around two-thirds of all browsers in use.

But Mozilla's Firefox has steadily increased its share, and now takes around a quarter. Then there's Safari, Google's Chrome, and others all competing for attention.

2011

Latest figures show Google Chrome grabbing almost another 10%, at the expense of all the other major players. These data are for desktop machines. For the first time, separate information relating to mobile & tablet devices is included (table below).

2010

Intesting changes between December 2009 and 2010 (above right) with both Internet Explorer and Firefox losing out to Google Chrome and Safari.

Quite a difference from the end of 2008 when the top two accounted for nearly 92%.

This means that it is of increasing importance that website owners ensure that their site works properly on a growing range of browsers to avoid missing potentially valuable hits. All Jaropa websites are tested on many browsers including some of the less well-known ones.

Which is best?

There's no single correct answer to this question and a lot of the decision making revolves around personal choice regarding appearance and features.

Mozilla is building an enviable reputation with its Firefox browser, largely regarded as the best all-rounder. It still has some issues and some might prefer the look and feel of other browsers but Firefox is an Open source project that is under constant development and is free to download.
